Never Caught: The Washingtons' Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge
Dunbar, Erica Armstrong. Never Caught: The Washingtons' Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge. New York: 37 Ink/Atria, 2017.
Why this matters here
Erica Armstrong Dunbar's history centers Ona Judge's escape from enslavement and the Washington household's efforts to recover her. The manuscript cites this specific story to make the contradiction between Washington's public reputation and private exercise of power historically concrete.
