Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF) Version 1.1: Recommendations for Mitigating the Risk of Software Vulnerabilities

National Institute of Standards and Technology. Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF) Version 1.1: Recommendations for Mitigating the Risk of Software Vulnerabilities. NIST SP 800-218. 2022. https://csrc.nist.gov/pubs/sp/800/218/final.

Why this matters here

NIST SP 800-218 (SSDF 1.1) recommends practices for mitigating software vulnerabilities across the development lifecycle—integrating security earlier so defects are found and addressed before late release or runtime. Coupling uses that “shift left” pressure as temporal compression: faster delivery still fails if consequence timing does not move with calendar speed. SSDF states federal guidance for secure development; the book asks whether earlier detection becomes earlier learning or only earlier ceremony.
