Out of the Crisis
Deming, W. Edwards. Out of the Crisis. Cambridge, MA: MIT Center for Advanced Engineering Study, 1986.
Why this matters here
W. Edwards Deming’s Out of the Crisis argues that quality improves when feedback enters redesign of the system of work, not when organizations narrate failure after the fact or blame individuals for systemic variation. Coupling uses that requirement at the point of ownership: unclear decision rights slow adaptation exactly when incidents demand clarity. Deming’s claim is about learning quality through redesign; the book asks who can still change the system when pressure arrives.
