Ella Baker and the Black Freedom Movement: A Radical Democratic Vision
Ransby, Barbara. Ella Baker and the Black Freedom Movement: A Radical Democratic Vision. Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2003.
Why this matters here
Barbara Ransby's biography of Ella Baker documents her insistence that student activists retain autonomy and practice group-centered leadership rather than become a youth division of an established organization. The World We Make Together takes that autonomy as leadership that works by making itself less visibly necessary—gathering people capable of leading from their own communities, not only following a few national figures.

History is collective, but responsibility remains uneven. The World We Make Together follows ordinary objects—a switch, a ballot, a fence, a bowl, a scale—into the institutions and relationships through which people shape public life without becoming either solitary heroes or passive products of structure.
